Guyana: Aubrey Norton Rules Out 2030 Presidential Bid, Focuses on Party Leadership

Aubrey Norton, the leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), has announced that he will not pursue a presidential bid for the 2030 elections. Instead, he has expressed his intention to contest for the leadership of his party during the next internal congress. In an appearance on CAMS TV’s morning show, Norton addressed inquiries regarding his political future and the current dynamics within the opposition party.

Norton explained that his decision to step aside from the presidential race is based on practical considerations related to his age, as he will be 73 by the time of the next elections. He emphasized his commitment to guiding the party through a phase of rebuilding and consolidation, stating, “The PNCR needs a steady hand while a new generation of leaders are being systematically guided and prepared for national leadership.”

In discussing recent defections from the party, Norton rejected claims that these departures indicate a structural collapse of the PNCR or the broader APNU coalition. He characterized those who left as individuals who joined the political scene during the coalition’s time in power and criticized their lack of deep ties to the party’s foundational philosophy.

Norton also addressed calls for his removal from leadership, asserting that he was elected through a competitive internal process and that any future changes in leadership should be determined democratically by party members. He has not endorsed a specific successor but aims to build a broad-based team of young leaders.

He concluded by stating that future coalition discussions with other opposition groups will depend on shared principles and a commitment to improving the lives of the citizens of Guyana.
