Attorney-at-Law Christopher Belfield has shared information regarding the collapse of a two-storey building on Cemetery Road that occurred on Tuesday. This building, located at Lot 10-10, Sublot “G”, Cemetery Road, Georgetown, holds personal significance for Belfield, as it was his childhood home. He noted that the property had been mentioned in a 2021 article by the Guyana Chronicle.
Belfield acknowledged the public’s longstanding concerns about the building’s deteriorating condition and the associated safety risks, which he also recognized. He indicated that plans were in place for the demolition of the structure; however, these plans were delayed primarily due to the need to relocate the final occupants of the property. He emphasized that this matter had been under his attention, along with others, and that relevant authorities were involved, including as recently as Tuesday morning.
In detailing the events leading to the collapse, Belfield stated that the front steps of the building became detached after 6:00 p.m. on Monday. On Tuesday, there were reports of cracking sounds from the windows before the house ultimately collapsed between approximately 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. At the time of the collapse, the elderly occupants were not present, although two individuals were briefly trapped but were able to escape without injuries.
Belfield described the incident as “unfortunate and deeply saddening,” noting that it occurred prior to the planned demolition. He expressed relief that no injuries were reported and that surrounding properties were undamaged. He mentioned that efforts to secure the site and remove debris would commence shortly.
Additionally, Belfield issued a public notice stating that the Cemetery Road property is not for sale, lease, rent, or any form of transfer or occupation. He warned that individuals without legal interest in the property have been making false claims about its availability and urged the public to exercise caution to avoid potential fraud. He encouraged anyone with concerns about the property to contact him directly.
