Guyana: AFC Prepares for Local Government Elections Amid Concerns Over GECOM

The Alliance For Change (AFC) is prepared to participate in the upcoming Local Government Elections, according to AFC Leader David Patterson. However, Patterson has expressed concerns regarding the readiness of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to effectively manage the electoral process.

In an interview, Patterson stated that while the AFC intends to contest the elections, there are significant administrative and institutional issues at GECOM that cannot be overlooked. He noted that GECOM has not convened since September 2025, and several senior managerial positions remain vacant, which could hinder the commission’s ability to prepare for the elections.

Patterson highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the appointment of opposition-nominated commissioners, which adds to the concerns about GECOM’s functionality. He warned that the upcoming elections might be predominantly managed by the Chief Elections Officer without adequate oversight from a fully operational commission. He questioned how essential preparations could be approved if the commission has not met.

He expressed concern that a single meeting might be convened to approve preparations that lacked proper commission oversight, which could lead the AFC to reconsider its participation in what might be perceived as a flawed electoral process. Nonetheless, Patterson affirmed that if the elections are conducted properly, the AFC would participate without hesitation.

Patterson also mentioned the possibility of collaborating with other political parties, reflecting on the desire among many Guyanese for a united political front against the PPP/C. He reiterated the AFC’s openness to working with others, although he could not confirm any ongoing discussions.

Additionally, Patterson called for improved voter identification measures, including the implementation of biometrics, suggesting that the Local Government Elections could serve as a testing ground for enhanced identification systems ahead of the next General and Regional Elections. He cautioned that delays at GECOM could be used as an excuse for not implementing these measures in a timely manner. While the AFC supports the Local Government Elections, the party remains concerned about the integrity of the electoral process under the current conditions at GECOM.
