Guyana: AFC Endorses Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett for UN Secretary General

Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett has been nominated by President Irfaan Ali for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). The Alliance For Change (AFC) has publicly endorsed this nomination, highlighting her qualifications and experience in diplomacy.

The AFC stated, “Guyana has produced a diplomat of exceptional calibre whose record of service, professionalism, and commitment to multilateralism makes her eminently qualified for the office of Secretary-General. The AFC is proud to endorse her candidacy and wishes her every success in this historic endeavour.” They also encouraged the Guyana government to actively promote her candidacy and engage with various international organizations, including the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Commonwealth, and the Organization of American States.

Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett, 52, has held several significant positions, including serving as Guyana’s foreign affairs and international cooperation minister from 2008 to 2015. She later became a Director at the Food and Agriculture Organisation and was appointed Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN in 2022. She played a key role during Guyana’s term as a member of the UN Security Council from 2024 to 2025.

The AFC emphasized her experience and integrity, stating that she possesses the qualities necessary to lead the UN during challenging times. They noted her commitment to international law, peaceful dispute resolution, and the advancement of small states within the international system.

Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett’s candidacy is seen as an opportunity for small developing states to have a stronger voice in global governance. She is the fifth nominee for the position, aiming to succeed António Guterres when his term ends on December 31, 2026. Other nominees include Michelle Bachelet Jeria from Chile, Rafael Mariano Grossi from Argentina, Rebeca Grynspan Mayufis from Costa Rica, and Macky Sall from Senegal.
