Government to Extend State of Emergency: Parliament Debate Set for Wednesday

In a pivotal move, the Government has announced plans to extend the current State of Emergency (SoE), set to expire on June 17. This decision followed a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) and was revealed in a press release from the Office of the Attorney General. The Prime Minister, alongside other members of the NSC, reviewed reports on the SoEs that were implemented from December 2024 to May 2026.

These reports carried extensive analyses of various datasets, pointing to significant local and international threats to national security. Interestingly, all three SoEs were found to be associated with meaningful disruptions across the categories of datasets reviewed and analyzed.

Taking into account the insights from the reports and advice from NSC members, the Prime Minister has decided to move forward with a request for an extension of the SoE. This extension aims for a further three months of emergency measures.

A resolution to extend the SoE is set to be debated in Parliament on Wednesday. This aligns with section 10(1) of the Constitution, which outlines the process for such extensions. The future path of the country’s security measures hangs in the balance, and the nation awaits the outcome of this crucial debate.
