In a shocking incident that underscores the growing concerns of safety within educational institutions, five students from Tranquillity Government Secondary School have been suspended following their involvement in the assault of Port-of-Spain City Corporation alderman Wayne Griffith. The altercation, which was captured in a viral video, occurred on Dundonald Street as Griffith attempted to intervene in a dispute among students.
According to police reports, the students involved in the incident were attempting to separate peers engaged in a fight when Griffith intervened. However, the situation quickly escalated, leaving Griffith injured and in need of medical attention. Personal items belonging to Griffith were also reported missing during the chaotic encounter.
Government officials have expressed deep concern over this act of violence, reflecting a broader issue of rising aggression in schools. Ministers for both Rural Development and Homeland Security have acknowledged the severity of the situation and highlighted ongoing efforts to address such vulnerabilities within the educational framework.
Meanwhile, the Police Service has urged parents to actively cooperate with school authorities and law enforcement to facilitate a comprehensive investigation. Assistant Superintendent Owie Russell specifically called upon the parents of the involved students to ensure their children’s cooperation, emphasizing that parental involvement is critical in resolving such matters and preventing future incidents.
