The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) announced today that it will be extending the opening hours of its registration units to 10 PM. This extension aims to allow voters more time to collect their voter identification cards ahead of the upcoming elections. This move is part of the Commission’s broader efforts to ensure maximum voter participation.
According to Elisa Graham, ABEC’s public relations officer, individuals who submitted their applications for replacement cards by April 27th can collect their cards at the registration units. For those who applied today, their cards will be ready for pickup on the morning of the elections, beginning at 6 AM.
ABEC has reported that 615 individuals have applied to renew their expired voter ID cards just this week, contributing to a total of over 32,000 registrations for the month. The electoral body also emphasized the importance of making provisions for those voters who are visually impaired or require wheelchair access, ensuring that every polling station will be fully equipped to meet these needs.
The overall voter turnout potential is reinforced by a registered voter base that has reached 63,313 people, reflecting an increase of over 3,000 since the last election. To facilitate the increased voter engagement, the Commission has prepared 190 polling stations across the country that will operate from 6 AM until 6 PM, with employers being encouraged to grant employees a four-hour window during work hours to cast their votes.
In preparation for election day, ABEC has issued a reminder regarding the attire rules at polling stations, prohibiting branded political clothing to ensure the voting process remains unbiased and orderly. Additionally, those unable to obtain their replacement cards in time will still have the opportunity to vote using a special ID card issued on election day, provided they have initiated the renewal process.
Graham reiterated the Commission’s commitment to maintaining a smooth electoral process and encouraged the public to cooperate with outlined procedures to ensure their participation in this significant democratic exercise.
