Dominica’s Youth Thrive in Public Speaking Event Fostering Community Engagement

Students from various primary and secondary schools across Dominica participated in the National Forage Club’s Public Speaking Competition. The event, themed ‘Beyond Ready: Thinking Bigger, Serving Better, Living Healthier’, aimed to enhance personal development and encourage active community participation.

The competition featured speeches that covered a wide range of topics, using public speaking as a platform for self-improvement and tackling broader societal challenges. Many students took the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills, articulating their thoughts with clarity and confidence. The event was well-attended, with participation from students, teachers, parents, and government officials, showcasing the broad support for youth engagement initiatives.

Leticia Lestrad White, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Culture, Youth Affairs, and Community Development, emphasized the importance of such events in developing young leaders. She highlighted that public speaking offers participants a chance to enhance their communication skills, build self-confidence, and cultivate leadership abilities. “This competition provides a great opportunity for students to share their unique perspectives,” she noted.

The Honorable Greta Roberts, Minister for Culture, Youth, Sports, and Community Development, also praised the young speakers for their courage and commitment to personal growth. She recognized the event’s role in nurturing talent and promoting active citizenship among the youth of Dominica. Minister Roberts expressed gratitude to the teachers and parents who supported the students, underscoring the value of community support in fostering youth development.

Thanks to the dedication of the National Forage Club and the Youth Development Division, the public speaking competition echoed the broader mission of empowering Dominica’s youth. By providing a platform for young voices, the event not only celebrated their achievements but also inspired them to continue contributing positively to their communities. Participants were awarded certificates and trophies, but more importantly, they gained invaluable confidence and skills that will aid their personal and professional journeys.
