The Booby Alley housing renewal project, a significant redevelopment initiative in Antigua, is set to reach completion on October 30. The project, carried out by Zhang Anhui Li Construction Group and funded by the People’s Republic of China, will deliver 150 climate-resilient condominium units across nine blocks. Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who toured the site with Chinese officials, expressed satisfaction with the progress, indicating that the project aligns with the government’s commitment to improving living standards.
Prime Minister Browne highlighted the importance of this redevelopment for the local community, especially considering the project’s inclusion of a rent-to-own component aimed at supporting residents displaced by the construction. This feature is geared toward facilitating more equitable access to homeownership and helping families transition into more stable living arrangements.
Beyond housing, the development plans include improvements to local water security, crucial for meeting residents’ needs in the area. The acquisition of a nearby parcel of land has been planned to install additional water tanks. These tanks will ensure a continual supply of potable water to the new housing units, enhancing the resilience of the community infrastructure in the long term.
Prime Minister Browne extended gratitude to China for its role in the Booby Alley project, referring to it as a transformative initiative that will make a lasting impact on Antigua and Barbuda’s development trajectory. He remarked that the project’s completion within the set timelines and budget exemplifies the effective collaboration between both nations, emphasizing China’s continued support in various development areas.
The housing project forms part of a broader governmental effort to uplift citizens by improving infrastructure and living conditions. According to Browne, these initiatives are designed not only for immediate impact but also to contribute to a vision of sustained growth and inclusivity, lifting members of the society across different socioeconomic classes.
