Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has responded to claims made by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar regarding Trinidad and Tobago’s economic progress and EU delisting. In her social media post, the Prime Minister claimed that the country’s removal from the EU list of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions and other positive developments occurred after the UNC took office. However, Beckles pointed out that the technical, legislative, and diplomatic work required for the delisting was completed before the 28 April 2025 General Election. She noted the passing of ten laws for compliance with EU and international tax transparency requirements, the country’s ‘Largely Compliant’ rating by the Global Forum, and the signing of the OECD Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters. Beckles also mentioned the expansion of the country’s tax information exchange network and the abolition of the Free Trade Zones regime following international review. The European Union confirmed Trinidad and Tobago’s delisting on 17 February 2026.
