Saprissa vs. Puntarenas FC: Gol y el Apertura 2026 tiene nuevo líder

Saprissa opened the second half of its Apertura 2026 match against Puntarenas FC with a 1‑0 lead that has moved the team to the top of the standings. The goal came in the 37th minute when Newton Williams delivered a left‑wing cross that Gerson Torres finished from close range. The match, played at the Cueva, saw the purple side dominate possession and create several clear chances. Mariano Torres struck the right post with a shot, and Williams also had a header that was saved by Puntarenas goalkeeper Adonis Pineda. Pineda made a crucial save when Williams headed the ball into the small area. With the win, Saprissa now leads the Apertura 2026 table. The victory would give the team 31 points, allowing them to overtake Sporting, who lost 2‑0 to Alajuelense earlier in the season. Puntarenas’ lineup included Adonis Pineda, Wesly Decas, Doryan Rodríguez, Vladimir Edghill, Ulises Segura, Pablo Álvarez, Kliver Gómez, Krisler Villalobos, Derek Cordero, Lucas Comachi and Yeltsin Tejeda. Saprissa’s squad featured Newton Williams, Gerson Torres, Mariano Torres and other key players. The match will be broadcast on FUTV, the channel that holds the rights to Saprissa’s home games. The game is scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Cueva. In related news, Puntarenas forward Orlando Sinclair has returned to training after recovering from injury. “I’m fully recovered and ready to train with the team,” Sinclair said on Thursday. “Coach Hernán Medford will decide if I play in Sunday’s match.”
