UNICEF Promotes Non-violent Parenting in Panama.

UNICEF is promoting non‑violent parenting practices in Panama after new data indicate that a significant proportion of children still experience physical discipline. According to the 2013 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), cited in UNICEF’s 2022 Situation Analysis of Adolescent Rights in Panama, 45 % of children and adolescents in the country had been subjected to violent discipline. UNICEF’s latest assessment, conducted almost a decade later, estimates that four out of ten children in Panama have experienced this type of discipline. In response, UNICEF has partnered with the Ecumenical Committee and the Interreligious Committee of Panama to develop a parenting guide aimed at faith leaders and community groups. The guide provides tools for mothers, fathers and caregivers to set limits and discipline children through love and respectful communication, without resorting to violence. Karina Núñez, UNICEF’s specialist in social and behavioral change, said the initiative seeks to expand support for families beyond programs that work directly with parents and caregivers. UNICEF is already collaborating with the Ministry of Social Development on the Responsible and Loving Parenting program, which offers assistance to vulnerable families through community promoters.
