Panama Canal Authority Set to Announce Companies Selected to Compete for Two Port Terminals.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that it will identify the companies that will compete to build and operate two new container terminals before the end of 2026. The projects, which are estimated to cost $2.6 billion, are part of the ACP’s broader $8.5 billion logistics and energy expansion program aimed at diversifying the canal’s activities. During a speech at the International Maritime Conference in Houston on November 4, ACP administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta said that the initial proposals had already been evaluated. “Companies that pass the pre‑qualification will receive a formal request for proposals,” she explained. The selected participants will then move on to the next stage of the bidding process. According to Reuters and Bloomberg, potential bidders include shipping giants Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), although the final list of pre‑qualified companies has not yet been confirmed. The ACP’s timetable indicates that concessions could be awarded by mid‑2027, with the new terminals expected to begin operations between 2030 and 2031. The terminals will be located in Corozal on the Pacific coast and Telfers on the Atlantic coast, together projected to handle between five and six million twenty‑foot equivalent units (TEU) per year. The initiative is intended to increase Panama’s container transshipment capacity, addressing limitations in the country’s existing port infrastructure.
