I Cannot Take Up Arms; If the Army Gives Political Space, We Will Do Politics; If It Doesn’t, We Can’t: Fawad Chaudhry

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry Sajid Ali made a statement on 8 November 2026 in which he warned that excluding politicians from the political process could create a vacuum that armed groups might fill. He said he had no intention or justification for taking up arms and that his ability to participate in politics depended on whether the army allowed it. “If the army gives political space, we will do politics; if it doesn’t, we can’t,” Chaudhry said. “The establishment now has to decide whether to provide politicians with democratic space in the country or allow an armed group to fill the resulting vacuum.” Chaudhry reflected on his past political affiliations, noting that he could have joined the Istihkam‑e‑Pakistan Party and would be a minister today if he had become part of it. He added that the army and the establishment have become integral to Pakistan’s political system, but that the current system is temporary. He predicted that when the establishment’s system changes, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League‑Nawaz (PML‑N) would be the first to reject the prevailing power structure, arguing that it does not suit any genuine political party in the long term. Regarding the future of Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf (PTI), Chaudhry said that if PTI came to power, it would pursue the same “politics of revenge” against its opponents that is currently being practised against PTI. He warned that if the political conflict were to turn into a direct confrontation between the army and PTI, political forces would suffer the most severe losses, as is already happening. The statement was issued in Islamabad and was reported by local news outlets.
