Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that a coalition with Arab parties would lead to Israel’s destruction. In a speech delivered on Saturday, 28 October, he said such a partnership would “cause Israel to collapse” and would create a situation worse than that seen in parts of Europe, echoing rhetoric used by far‑right politicians there. The remarks came just after President Isaac Herzog announced that the responsibility for forming a new government would be given to opposition leader Gadi Eizenkot. Herzog’s decision followed talks with all parties after the 27 October election, in which no single party secured a majority. Eizenkot, a former military chief who has recently entered politics, heads a coalition that seeks support from secular and liberal Israelis and has opened a path for cooperation with ultra‑Orthodox Jews. The coalition could also include the moderate Islamist party Ra’am, whose leader recognises Israel as a Jewish state, and an Arab‑majority party outside the joint list that could provide additional backing. According to Herzog, the parties representing 67 members of the 120‑seat Knesset recommended Eizenkot, while Netanyahu’s coalition received support from 46 lawmakers. The president’s role is to select a candidate, and he indicated that he would also explore the possibility of a national unity government that brings together both camps. Netanyahu reiterated his support for a national unity government on Saturday, stating, “I call for the formation of a national unity government. This government will include all parties from the national camp and Zionist parties that want to protect our state. This is the only state for the Jewish people.” He did not claim that the leadership of such a coalition must be given to him. In response, the Yashar Party urged its allies and its own Likud members to join a national unity government under Eizenkot. In a post on X, the party said, “If Likud and its allies suddenly show interest in ‘unity’ and a larger government, they can publicly announce breaking ties with extremists and show interest in joining a government led by Prime Minister Eizenkot.”
