RD reafirma cooperación y reconoce nuevo presidente de Paraguay

The Dominican Republic reaffirmed its friendship and cooperation with Paraguay on Saturday, recognizing the new president, Pedro Alliana, amid the country’s transition following the resignation of former President Santiago Peña. Through a statement posted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ social media channels, the Dominican government expressed its intention to continue strengthening bilateral ties with the new Paraguayan administration and affirmed its respect for Paraguay’s democratic institutions and constitutional processes. Peña announced his resignation on Thursday, citing a crisis triggered by the collapse of Ueno Bank, one of Paraguay’s largest financial institutions. The bank’s failure sparked widespread concern over the president’s links to the entity and led to a political crisis. In his absence, the Paraguayan Senate formally removed Peña from office, finding him guilty of “mal desempeño de funciones” (misconduct in the performance of his duties) in a parliamentary trial. The Dominican Republic’s statement underscores its commitment to maintaining constructive relations with Paraguay during this period of political change.
