Un terremoto de 5,7 sacude el centro de Japón y deja al menos una veintena de heridos

TOKYO — A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Japan on Sunday, resulting in at least 23 injuries and causing disruptions to regional transportation services. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the tremor occurred at 1:04 a.m. local time (16:04 GMT Saturday). The epicenter was located in Shizuoka Prefecture at a depth of 40 kilometers. No tsunami warning was issued following the event. The earthquake reached a level 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale—which measures surface shaking and potential damage—in parts of Aichi, Nagano, Gifu, and Shizuoka prefectures. According to the news agency Kyodo, local fire departments and the Aichi prefectural government reported at least 20 injuries, none of which were considered life-threatening. Additionally, the Shizuoka prefectural government confirmed three injuries, involving individuals between the ages of 30 and 90. Chubu Electric Power Company stated that no anomalies were detected at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant, located in Shizuoka approximately 200 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. The earthquake impacted local rail services, and the operator of the Shinkansen bullet train reported delays between Shizuoka and Gifu-Hashima stations as safety inspections were conducted. Japan is situated along the “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most seismically active regions. Due to the frequency of earthquakes in the country, infrastructure is specifically designed to withstand significant tremors.
