IEC delays election results announcement to Sunday

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has postponed the official announcement of the 2026 local government election results until Sunday, November 8. The commission stated that the delay is necessary to resolve outstanding objections and complete five mandated ward recounts before the final tally can be certified. As of Saturday afternoon, 99% of the national vote had been counted. IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya reported that the commission had received 197 formal objections by 3:00 p.m. Of those, 54 were dismissed, eight were withdrawn, and two were upheld. The IEC has ordered recounts for specific wards in Tshwane, Mangaung, Thaba Chweu, and the Breede Valley. The commission emphasized that because the objections process can influence the final allocation of seats, current party standings remain provisional. According to reports, the African National Congress (ANC) held 30.89% of the national vote, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) at 24.58%, the MK Party at 9.63%, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at 6.25%, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) at 5.68%. Results processing has been completed in the Free State, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Limpopo provinces. Outstanding work remains in three Gauteng metropolitan municipalities, Rustenburg in the North West, and the Msunduzi and eThekwini municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal. The IEC expects these processes to conclude by Saturday evening. The national announcement is now scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Until that time, the commission maintains that all leads and seat allocations are subject to change as the remaining objections and recounts are finalized.
