Banderas, reposeras y un viaje relámpago para quedar a metros de León XIV: así vivieron los argentinos la misa papal en Uruguay

Pope Francis (León XIV) celebrated his first mass of a South‑American tour in Paysandú, Uruguay, on Saturday, 8 November. The ceremony was held at the Municipal Park Paris‑London, where fewer than 30 000 attendees were estimated, a figure below the expectations of local and Argentine authorities. The Pope’s arrival was delayed by rain and cold wind, but the crossing of the Artigas Bridge from Colón, Entre Ríos, to Paysandú was smooth and without congestion. The bridge, which links the Argentine city of Colón with the Uruguayan town, was expected to see a large pilgrimage, but the turnout was modest. Pope Francis travelled in a papal motorcade that moved along the perimeter of the park, allowing many faithful to see him up close. Among the attendees were Argentine residents from Entre Ríos, Santa Fe and other parts of the Litoral, as well as people from Peru and Brazil. Some Argentine families travelled long distances; for example, a couple from Zárate drove nearly 300 km, stopping 10 km from the park to walk the rest of the way, hoping to see the Pope in person. During the mass, the Pope called for unity, the building of bridges, and referenced the cultural symbol of mate. He also spoke about the importance of strengthening ties with the Uruguayan people, who live in a country described by him as the most secular in the continent. A central figure of the event was Jacinto Vera, the former Bishop of Montevideo who was beatified by Pope Francis in 2023. Vera, considered the father of the Uruguayan Church, was highlighted as a symbol of the Pope’s message of reconciliation and unity. The mass was preceded by a Christian band from Argentina, Betania, which performed for the thousands of attendees. The Pope’s visit to Paysandú is part of a broader tour that will continue to Buenos Aires on Sunday.
