Ecuador refuerza combate al crimen con tecnología de EEUU

Ecuador and the United States signed two implementation agreements on Friday to strengthen bilateral cooperation on security matters, with a focus on organized crime, money laundering, kidnapping, extortion and illegal mining. The agreements were announced by the U.S. Embassy in Quito on X. The first agreement will incorporate U.S. technology to enhance the financial analysis capabilities of Ecuador’s Unidad de Análisis Financiero y Económico (UAFE). The goal is to identify criminal networks and trace proceeds from illicit activities. The second agreement aims to bolster the operational and investigative capacity of the Unidad Nacional Antisecuestros y Extorsión (UNASE) as it transitions into a national directorate, with the objective of dismantling organizations involved in kidnapping and extortion. Participants at the signing ceremony included U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs F. Cartwright Weiland, U.S. Embassy Business Officer Lawrence Petroni, Ecuador’s Minister of Defense Gian Carlo Loffredo, Minister of Interior John Reimberg, and Secretary General of Public Administration José Julio Neira. Ecuador has been under a declared “internal armed conflict” since 2024, a status adopted by President Daniel Noboa to intensify the fight against criminal gangs, which he has referred to as “terrorists.” Despite the heightened security measures, the country recorded a record number of homicides in 2025, with approximately 9,300 deaths reported by the Ministry of Interior.
