LOÍZA – The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the Puerto Rico Teachers Association (AMPR) conducted a community service event on Friday at the Jobos Virtuoso Rivera García Elementary School in Loíza, providing resources and facility improvements to the campus. During the event, organized as part of the SOMOS Inc. 2026 conference, volunteers distributed 1,200 books and 300 backpacks filled with school supplies. The initiative, part of the "Reading Opens the World" campaign, also provided personal hygiene items, LEGO educational materials, and essential food supplies to the school’s 210 students and 21 teachers. In addition to the donations, volunteers performed maintenance work at the school, including gardening, cleaning, and the refurbishment of recreational areas. "Today we are here to support and strengthen the people of Loíza, but also to join forces and fight for the resources, support, and tools that every child and every family needs to pave their way toward a better life," said AFT President Randi Weingarten. The event was attended by Weingarten, AFT Executive Vice President Evelyn DeJesus, and AMPR President Víctor Bonilla Sánchez, alongside various union and community leaders. "Our public schools are the heart of Puerto Rico's communities, and supporting them is a responsibility we share," Bonilla Sánchez stated. The "Reading Opens the World" campaign has distributed more than 60,000 books over the past five years, benefiting over a dozen public schools across Puerto Rico. The initiative is supported by several organizations, including the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), New York State United Teachers, the Public Employees Federation, the Professional Staff Congress of the City University of New York, and the American Association of University Professors. Separately, as part of the conference-related initiatives, UFT President Michael Mulgrew delivered a $20,000 donation this week to the Dr. Julio J. Henna Elementary School in San Juan. The donation fulfills a commitment made during last year’s service day and is intended to improve the school environment for a community impacted by recent federal immigration enforcement operations.
