Fifteen-year-old Grenadian swimmer Kristin Gresham set a new national record and established three long-course personal bests during her performance at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal. Competing between November 3 and 5 at the Dakar Aquatic Complex, the Westmorland Senior School student represented Grenada alongside teammate Jacob Collymore. Gresham’s most significant achievement occurred during the 100-metre backstroke heats, where she clocked a time of 1:09.63. This performance surpassed the previous national record of 1:09.85, set by Kimberley Ince in 2019. During the race, Gresham recorded the fastest reaction time in her heat at 0.64 seconds and finished 21st overall out of 26 competitors. The time marked a 1.42-second improvement over her previous personal best. In addition to the 100-metre backstroke, Gresham competed in three other events, setting personal bests in two of them. In the 50-metre backstroke, she finished in 31.69 seconds, improving upon her previous best of 32.11 seconds. In the 50-metre breaststroke, she recorded a time of 34.72 seconds, lowering her previous personal best of 35.34 seconds and placing 12th overall out of 36 entrants. She also contested the 100-metre breaststroke, finishing in 1:20.71. National Swim Coach Justin Steele, who supported Gresham alongside Chef de Mission Tisagh Chase, praised the athlete’s performance and temperament. "Kristin made a fantastic showing of herself across the four events she competed in here in Dakar," Steele said. "She showed great focus, maturity, and proved that she can handle competing at a competition of such a high level." Steele also addressed the environmental challenges faced by the athletes, noting that high temperatures at the open-air venue required careful management. He commended the organizing committee for implementing a heat mitigation plan as temperatures rose throughout the event. Gresham, who expressed honor in representing Grenada on the international stage, returns home with momentum as the Grenadian swim team prepares for the upcoming OECS Swimming Championships in St. Lucia.
