Constitución Dominicana: 182 años de su proclamación

The Dominican Republic will mark the 182nd anniversary of the proclamation of its first constitution on Friday, November 6, 2026. The event commemorates the approval of the 1844 Constitution in San Cristóbal, nine months after the country declared independence on February 27, 1844. After independence, the new state needed a legal framework to govern its institutions and the rights of its citizens. A Constituent Assembly, composed of representatives from various localities, convened in San Cristóbal to draft the document. On November 6, 1844, the assembly adopted the Constitution, establishing the separation of powers among the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches. The original text also contained Article 210, which granted extraordinary powers to President Pedro Santana during wartime, reflecting the political tensions of the era. The Constitution is the Dominican Republic’s supreme law, outlining the organization of the state, fundamental rights, and the responsibilities of public institutions. Over the years it has been amended to reflect political, social, and institutional changes. The National Constitution Day is observed each year on November 6 to honor the 1844 charter. Schools, government agencies, and civic groups typically hold educational and commemorative activities to highlight the constitution’s historical significance and to promote democratic values and citizen participation. The anniversary underscores the constitution’s enduring role in shaping the nation’s identity and institutional history.
