Free cataract surgery camp in Sindhuli improves vision for elderly residents Sindhuli, Nepal – A two‑day cataract surgery camp held at the community eye treatment centre in Sindhuli on 13 and 14 October (Kartik 13–14) helped 141 patients receive free eye operations. The camp was organised by the Nepal Red Cross Society Sindhuli District Branch in partnership with Neg Alik T & Jang Wins Family Singapore and Tifgood Vision Nepal. According to the district branch, 75 women and 66 men underwent cataract removal. After the procedures, patients were given necessary medication and glasses at no cost. The local government covered transportation expenses for those attending the camp. The eye treatment centre has been offering free cataract surgery since 2013. “We have performed over 600 cataract operations annually from this centre,” said Ashok Shrestha, chairman of the district branch. Stories of improved vision Manmaya Pariyar, 66, of Ward 5, Triveni Rural Municipality, had been suffering from cataracts for seven years. “Both eyes could see, but nothing was clear because of the cataracts,” she said. “After the operation on my right eye, I can see much better.” She still needs surgery on her left eye. Gyan Kumari Nyaupane, 74, of Ward 13, Kamalmai Municipality, had previously had cataract surgery on her right eye three years ago. “Now I can see clearly with both eyes,” she said. “It feels like a new life.” She received free surgery on her left eye during the camp. Hari Majhi, 70, also from Ward 13, Kamalmai, had long struggled with vision loss due to cataracts. “I was worried because I could not see well enough to use the toilet,” he said. “After the surgery, I can see again and I am hopeful about how long I will keep this vision.” Background Many of the patients had delayed treatment because of financial constraints and limited access to healthcare. The camp provided an opportunity for those who could not afford or reach a hospital to receive timely surgery. The Nepal Red Cross Society’s Sindhuli District Branch has been running community eye treatment centres since 2013, performing more than 600 cataract surgeries each year. The recent camp continues this effort to improve eye health among the district’s elderly population.
