Латвийские проверки российского зерна на предмет хищения у Украины останутся непубличными

The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service (PVS) has announced that it will not publicly disclose the results of laboratory tests on grain transported through Latvia by Russia. The tests are intended to determine whether the grain originates from Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, a practice sometimes referred to as “blood grain.” In September, the Latvian government authorized the PVS to conduct laboratory analyses to establish the grain’s provenance. More than a month ago, the service collected samples of grain that had passed through Latvia en route from Russia and sent them for testing. The purpose of the investigation is to identify any grain that may have been illegally removed from occupied Ukrainian areas. According to Latvian Television (LTV), the PVS has stated that it will not release the findings of these tests to the public. Even if the analyses indicate that the grain is of Ukrainian origin and potentially stolen by Russia, the information will not be made available to the wider community. Latvia has also been expanding international cooperation on grain provenance. A week ago, Minister of Agriculture Uldis Augulis signed a memorandum of understanding with Ukraine and the United Kingdom. The agreement aims to improve the joint system for verifying the origin of agricultural products, including the development of sampling methods and laboratory procedures that can detect illicit grain shipments from occupied Ukrainian regions. The memorandum does not specify how the results of such investigations will be used if suspicious cargo is identified, nor what actions might be taken against the shippers.
