The English national team and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has been awarded the “France Football” Ballon d’Or. According to the magazine’s editor, Vincent Garcia, Kane secured the title by a margin of fewer than 41 points over runner-up Kylian Mbappé—the same point differential that separated Rodri and Vinícius Júnior in 2024. The decision has sparked significant debate within the football community, with former French international Samir Nasri among the most prominent critics. Speaking on the podcast Les Affranchis, Nasri questioned the criteria used for the selection. “I do not agree with this decision at all. What is it based on? Just the number of goals scored?” Nasri asked. He argued that Kane was not the standout player in the Bundesliga, citing Michael Olise as a superior performer, and questioned Kane’s impact on the international stage. “I respect Harry Kane, but was this season truly exceptional for his career? His biggest match was the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, where he and his team were eliminated.” Nasri also expressed dissatisfaction with Kylian Mbappé’s second-place finish, suggesting that the French forward’s achievements in Ligue 1 were inflated by the lack of competition. “For me, neither Kane nor Mbappé should have been first. Mbappé shouldn’t even have been second. He won a championship where he is essentially playing alone,” Nasri stated, adding that he would have preferred to see Lamine Yamal receive the award. Nasri further speculated on Mbappé’s reaction to the results, suggesting the player might feel disillusioned with the voting process. “Imagine, he probably thought that after the World Cup, they would give the Ballon d’Or to Yamal, but then he saw that it went to Kane. He likely thought: ‘They will never give me this award. What more could I have done?'” The announcement has intensified existing tensions regarding the Ballon d’Or selection process, as critics continue to debate the weight given to individual statistics versus team success and overall influence on the game.
