Nearly three decades after taking dancefloors around the world by storm, Jamaican dancehall legend Beenie Man has achieved another major international milestone, with his iconic hit “Who Am I (Sim Simma)” officially certified gold in the United Kingdom.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) awarded the certification on Friday, 23 October 2026, recognising 400,000 units in combined sales and streaming equivalents.

The achievement comes almost three years after the song earned gold certification in the United States in November 2023, where it reached the equivalent of 500,000 units.

Originally released in 1997, “Who Am I” became one of the defining anthems of dancehall’s international expansion. The infectious track peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Beenie Man’s first top 40 hit in Britain.

In the United States, it climbed to number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 15 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, helping introduce Jamaican dancehall to an even wider international audience.

Produced by Jamaican producer Jeremy Harding on the legendary Playground riddim, the song appeared on Beenie Man’s Grammy-nominated album Many Moods of Moses.

Harding previously recalled that Beenie Man arrived at his studio having already written lyrics for the riddim. The artiste reportedly entered the recording booth and delivered an almost flawless performance in what appeared to be a single take.

The producer has described the track as a dancehall anthem whose popularity has continued across generations.

The latest honour represents Beenie Man’s second UK certification, following the silver certification of his collaboration “Dude”, featuring Miss Thing, in 2020. However, “Who Am I” is his first UK gold-certified single.

For Caribbean music lovers, particularly those who remember the explosion of dancehall during the 1990s, the achievement is another reminder of the lasting global influence of Jamaican music.

Nearly 30 years after its release, “Sim Simma” continues to demonstrate that a true dancehall classic can transcend generations, international borders and changing musical trends.
