Jordania reporta más de 20 miembros del Estado Islámico muertos en ataques contra Siria

Jordanian authorities reported on Tuesday that more than 20 suspected members of the Islamic State (ISIS) were killed during airstrikes carried out by the Jordanian Armed Forces in southern Syria. The strikes were described as retaliation for an attack on a Greek Orthodox church in western Jordan that killed nine people on the previous Friday. Jordanian Defence Minister and government spokesperson Mohamed Momani said the operation destroyed a significant weapons cache and was based on intelligence aimed at neutralising terrorist threats to Jordan’s national security. He added that the forces avoided areas where civilians were present, although civilian casualties were acknowledged. Syria’s Civil Defence confirmed that at least seven civilians died as a result of the strikes on four locations in southern Syria, with the majority of the victims in the village of Al Tanf. Five members of a single family were killed, including three children, and another three members of the same family were wounded. The Syrian government condemned the Jordanian attacks as an unjustifiable violation of its sovereignty and a breach of the principles of good neighbourliness and existing cooperation mechanisms. The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated that the operation was conducted without prior coordination with Damascus. Jordanian officials expressed regret over the civilian deaths and reiterated that their military operations aim to minimise harm to non‑combatants. The Jordanian government also announced the detention of three suspects allegedly linked to the church attack, though ISIS has not claimed responsibility for that incident. Both Jordan and Syria have agreed to establish an urgent joint committee to assess the consequences of the operation and strengthen security coordination.
