जितगढीस्थित दुर्गा मन्दिरमा १३ औँ सरायँ नाच

On Kartik 9, 2023, the 13th Saray dance was performed in the courtyard of the Durga temple in Jitgadhi, Butwal. The event, attended by local officials and cultural enthusiasts, was part of a long‑standing tradition that links religious faith with Nepal’s cultural identity. The Saray dance, which originated in Arghakhanchi and Gulmi after Dashain and continued until the full moon as a victory celebration, has spread across the Terai and now takes place in cities such as Butwal, Kathmandu, Lamahi, Vanaganga, Gorushinge, Pathar Kot and Ghorahi. According to Rishi Azaad, the founder of the local Saray tradition, the performance in Jitgadhi “continues the cultural heritage of the region.” President Dipak Panthee added that the dance preserves traditional culture and upholds the glory of Jitgadhi. The ceremony drew participation from Butwal’s mayor Khelraj Pandey, deputy mayor Sabitra Devi Aryal and ward chair Narayan Poon, among others. The Nepali dictionary identifies Arghakhanchi as the etymological origin of the Saray dance.
