Road safety activist Ayanda Msweli honoured for humanitarian work

Road safety ambassador and former traffic reporter Ayanda Msweli has been honored with the Annual Professor Yusuf Karodia Award for his contributions to community service and philanthropy. The award ceremony, hosted by MANCOSA at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, recognized Msweli for his efforts in social upliftment, including the construction of homes for indigent families. Msweli, a former Durban Metro Police officer and Ukhozi FM traffic reporter, began his charitable work by collecting small donations to build houses for elderly women in Jozini and Nongoma. Through the Ayanda Msweli Foundation, he has since overseen the construction of homes valued between R350,000 and R500,000 each and has assisted students from disadvantaged backgrounds in accessing tertiary education. The award, which commemorates the legacy of the late Professor Yusuf Karodia, founder of MANCOSA and REGENT Business School, has previously been presented to Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman of Gift of the Givers and Adeline Singh of Supporting Those In Need Together. During his acceptance speech, Msweli emphasized the importance of compassion and the spirit of Ubuntu in addressing societal challenges such as poverty and gender-based violence. “Ubuntu is a gift that never spoils. Hide your neighbour’s embarrassment. With Ubuntu we can overcome all the challenges facing us,” he stated. As part of the award, Msweli received a MANCOSA Higher Certificate bursary valued at R22,000, which he may allocate to a recipient of his choice. Additionally, he has been granted the opportunity to nominate two primary schools to receive mobile libraries through MANCOSA’s Million Books Project, an initiative designed to improve literacy in disadvantaged schools. Each mobile library contains 300 books. Msweli is well-known for his social media presence, where he livestreams traffic updates, accident reports, and coverage of social issues, including service delivery shortcomings. His charitable initiatives are largely funded by public donations, often collected while he travels across the province. This recognition follows the conclusion of his freelance contract with Ukhozi FM, a station where he gained popularity for his distinctive style of traffic reporting. Msweli has expressed an interest in returning to the station should the opportunity arise.
