42 SWRHA Workers Terminated Despite Halted Retrenchment Plan

At least 42 workers of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) were dismissed on Tuesday, even after the authority’s planned retrenchment of 124 staff was paused following intervention from the National Union of Government and Federated Workers (NUGFW).

NUGFW southern president Jason Gordon confirmed that the human resources department had stopped action against roughly 80 other employees, citing the union’s involvement in the halt.

The union said it had not been consulted before the retrenchment letters were issued, raising concerns over the legality and fairness of the dismissals. NUGFW president Christopher Streete advised staff to continue reporting for duty while the union sought a meeting with management.

The National Trade Union Centre (NATUC) has backed the workers, condemning the terminations and demanding that the government intervene. NATUC calls for the withdrawal of termination letters, the reinstatement of affected staff, and an urgent meeting with the union, while also requesting an investigation into compliance with the Retrenchment and Severance Benefits Act.

The dismissed employees had been essential to maintaining public health services in the region, and their sudden loss of income is expected to strain families already coping with high living costs.
