Young Challenges $50,000 Fuel Budget for 14 Tobago Police Vehicles

Stuart Young, SC, MP, has raised a sharp question over a $50,000 fuel and lubricants allocation for the Tobago police fleet, asking how a fleet of about 14 vehicles could operate for a full year on that sum.

Young noted that in 2025 the actual spend on fuel and lubricants in Tobago was $1 million. He pressed whether the $50,000 figure, pegged for 2027 in the post accompanying the video, could possibly be sufficient. “There is no way $50,000 is going to be sufficient for a whole year for 14 active police vehicles in Tobago,” he said, before asking directly: “Is it that Tobago is being shortchanged?”

The response pointed to the arrangement for repairs that cannot be done in Tobago, which are brought to Trinidad. Young also highlighted that routine needs such as oil changes require vehicles to come down to Trinidad, adding to the pressure on the fleet. On the maintenance side, the transcript shows a separate allocation of $400,000 for the Tobago arm of the police service in 2026, revised downwards from an original estimate of $600,000.

Young questioned whether that smaller maintenance sum was adequate for the fleet. “Out of the $600,000 that was originally estimated, and now a revised estimate of $400,000, that is sufficient to maintain 14 vehicles in Tobago?” he asked. The exchange also touched on fleet cards for refuelling and the purchase of fuel at the pump.

The figures have raised concerns about whether the budget matches the actual operational needs of the Tobago police fleet, particularly with Carnival approaching. Young’s challenge puts the allocation under scrutiny as the fleet’s fuel and maintenance costs come into focus.
