Main Points
Kimi Antonelli stands on the brink of Formula 1 history after just two seasons in the sport, with the 2026 United States Grand Prix offering his first realistic chance to claim the Drivers’ Championship. The Italian’s consistent form has propelled him into title contention, but victory at Circuit of The Americas on Sunday will not be enough to secure the crown. Antonelli’s path to the title hinges on a perfect storm of results. Should he win the race, his nearest challenger, team-mate George Russell, would need to finish no higher than ninth to mathematically eliminate him from contention. However, even that outcome would not guarantee Antonelli’s triumph. Lewis Hamilton, currently third in the standings, would also need to finish outside the top five to ensure Antonelli’s victory seals the championship. The permutations are tight, and the scenario remains a long shot. Antonelli himself has acknowledged the challenge posed by Max Verstappen, the four-time World Champion, who has been in scintillating form. Verstappen’s recent wins in Bahrain and Singapore, along with a second-place finish in Baku, have closed the gap to just 119 points. For Antonelli to secure the title, Verstappen must avoid outscoring him by six points or more over the weekend. The stakes could not be higher. Antonelli’s potential coronation would mark one of the most dramatic title races in recent memory, underscoring his meteoric rise from Formula Regional European Championship fighter to championship contender. With the paddock set to descend on Austin for a high-octane triple-header of races, all eyes will be on whether Antonelli can deliver the performance of a lifetime—or if the title will slip away once more.
