Oral histories preserve America’s untold stories—from civil rights to nuclear testing

Across the United States, oral histories serve as a vital archive of personal experiences that written records often miss. From the Pacific Northwest to the Nevada desert, these firsthand accounts—collected by universities, museums, and grassroots organisations—capture the voices of everyday people who shaped history. The University of Washington Libraries alone hosts hundreds of collections, including interviews with Tacoma Urban League leaders, South Asian immigrants, and veterans of Seattle’s civil rights movement.

One standout project is the South Asian Oral History Project, one of the first in the U.S. to document pan-South Asian immigrant experiences in the Pacific Northwest. These interviews reveal the diversity of occupations, religions, and languages among early settlers, offering a window into their struggles and triumphs. Similarly, the Nevada Test Site Oral History Project preserves memories of those affected by Cold War nuclear testing, while the Oral History Digital Collection at the University of Mississippi focuses on the Civil Rights movement in the South.

Oral history isn’t just about the past—it’s a tool for understanding present-day communities. The Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History Oral Histories feature activists who fought for equality, and the Veterans History Project collects stories from WWI to modern conflicts. Even smaller initiatives, like the Tacoma Community History Project, involve students interviewing locals to preserve neighbourhood stories.

These collections highlight the power of personal narratives. As the University of Washington notes, oral histories ‘provide rich insight into changing experiences’—whether it’s the resilience of Japanese Americans during WWII incarceration or the everyday lives of labour movement participants. By giving voice to those often overlooked, these projects ensure that America’s full story is told.
