Cassi Scraps Soca Retirement After Radio DJ Refuses to Play His New Song

Soca artist Cassi has reversed his retirement from the industry, and he says a radio DJ’s refusal to play his new song is the reason he is staying.

In a video posted to his TikTok account, Cassi said he had announced earlier this year that this would be his final year, explaining that he did not like the way the industry had evolved. Rather than trying to integrate, he said, he chose to separate, adding that he had no problem with people doing what they had to do.

But the decision shifted after he sent his new song to a DJ friend on the radio and a few others. Cassi said he saw the song being shared, with everything apparently fine, until he was told the DJ was not playing it. According to Cassi, when he spoke to the man, he reiterated that he was not playing the record. Cassi pointed to the length of his own career, saying he started in 2002, roughly 25 years ago, and that the man would have been just conceived or very young when he began.

He also raised a question about the role of presenters on radio stations, asking who gives a salary to presenters who decide what ads and music get played. Cassi described the presenter as a senior at the radio station.

Then came the reversal. Cassi said he had announced his resignation but was taking back the documents, saying he is not resigning anymore. He attributed the decision directly to the DJ’s conduct, thanking him for making him stay, and saying he had wanted to leave but now stays because of what he called a stupid, illiterate, disrespectful act.

He closed with a line drawn from the video’s caption: never underestimate the unpredictability of stupidity.
