Port of Spain is preparing for another edition of Diner en Blanc on November 14, promising an evening of elegant all-white dining, French-inspired entertainment and Caribbean cuisine at a location that will remain secret until the day of the event.
The upcoming celebration was officially launched on Monday at the residence of French Ambassador Guillaume Pierre, where invited guests received an introduction to this year’s experience and sampled dishes prepared by catering partner Freebird Restaurant.
Diner en Blanc is an international dining concept built around a large-scale pop-up picnic, with participants dressing entirely in white and gathering at a previously undisclosed location.
The tradition originated in Paris in 1988 when François Pasquier organised a gathering of friends in the Bois de Boulogne. It subsequently developed into an internationally recognised dining experience.
Port of Spain hosted its first edition in 2016 on the grounds of Queen’s Hall. Monsegue and Roach were both involved in that event, serving in table leadership and logistics roles respectively.
Speaking at the launch, Monsegue explained that the mystery surrounding the destination remains central to the experience. Guests will know their meeting arrangements but will only discover the actual dining venue on the day.
She acknowledged the challenge of keeping a location secret in Trinidad and Tobago, where personal connections often make information difficult to conceal.
French Ambassador Pierre, who will attend his first Diner en Blanc Port of Spain, welcomed the event and expressed enthusiasm about the food and the French tradition of carefully presented dining.
Roach said organisers had been particularly selective about this year’s venue and were introducing additional interactive elements alongside the event’s familiar table arrangements and decorative features.
The organisers also addressed concerns about unpredictable weather. Monsegue described the occasion as a rain-or-shine event, while Roach confirmed that a contingency plan would be prepared, without providing specific details.
One of the launch’s attractions was a tasting menu presented by Freebird Restaurant’s Rhe-Anne and Rhenard Callendar.
Rhe-Anne described the approach as incorporating French influences into the restaurant’s established culinary style.
Registration for the November 14 event is already open, although the final dining location remains undisclosed.
Organisers are also looking beyond Port of Spain. Monsegue revealed plans for a broader Diner en Blanc Trinidad and Tobago event next May, which would not be restricted to the capital.
For this November’s gathering, the combination of local cuisine, Parisian inspiration and an undisclosed setting will once again form the centrepiece of the experience.
