Syrian embassy returns seized passport after 43 years

The Syrian embassy in Berlin has returned the passport of a German resident that was seized by the former Assad regime 43 years ago. Adnan Wahoud, a mechanical engineer and inventor who has lived in Germany for many years, said the passport was confiscated after he refused to cooperate with the former Syrian government. The passport was returned to Wahoud on Monday, October 7, 2026, following a request from the Syrian diplomatic mission in Berlin. The embassy confirmed that the document had been held since the early 1980s and that it was now being returned to its rightful owner. Wahoud expressed relief at the return of his passport, noting that the loss had caused him significant inconvenience over the decades. The incident highlights the long‑lasting effects of political actions taken during the Assad era on individuals abroad.
