Senior journalist Hamid Mir has raised questions regarding the use of a government aircraft by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for a recent trip to London. During his program on Geo News, Mir pointed to what he described as contradictory statements made by the Chief Minister regarding her status during the travel.
Mir noted that while Maryam Nawaz previously stated she was on leave during her time in London, she later asserted that a chief minister is never on leave to justify the use of the government plane. Mir suggested that the Chief Minister should reflect on these inconsistencies.
In response to public and political criticism, Maryam Nawaz addressed the matter during a ceremony in Multan, where she inaugurated an electric bus service. She stated that the aircraft belongs to the office of the Chief Minister rather than to her personally, noting that all four provincial chief ministers have access to such aircraft.
Regarding her trip to London to attend her daughter’s graduation, Maryam Nawaz maintained that she personally paid all associated expenses, which she stated amounted to 22.5 million rupees. She rejected the criticism directed at her, stating that she is accountable to the public rather than to social media commentators. She further alleged that those criticizing her work are motivated by external financial interests.
During the event in Multan, the Chief Minister also highlighted various development projects in Punjab, including the allocation of 300 billion rupees for the Apna Ghar, Apni Chhat housing scheme and the introduction of electric buses and bikes. She defended her administration’s performance and criticized the opposition, specifically referencing the recent visit of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister to Punjab, which she characterized as a failure.
