The National Elections Commission (CNE) has formally recommended that the government maintain the current president of the Electoral Census Commission (CRE) in Portugal. The recommendation follows reports of an imminent replacement of the official, a move the CNE warns could disrupt the electoral process.
In a statement, the CNE expressed unanimous concern regarding the timing of the potential change, noting that it occurs less than two days before the scheduled September 21, 2026, exhibition of electoral census records. This phase is considered a critical component of the preparations for the presidential elections, which are set to take place on November 15, 2026.
The commission stated that the current president has received the necessary training and capacity building for the role. According to the CNE, replacing the official at this stage would introduce instability and hinder the commission’s ability to manage voter data and address potential complaints from the electorate.
The CNE further argued that the replacement is not advisable under the current circumstances, as it could create unnecessary difficulties for the regular development of electoral activities. The commission also cited Article 83, paragraph 2 of the Electoral Code, which stipulates that the mandate of CRE members remains valid until the publication of final results for the last election held within an election year.
