Kes Dieffenthaller has revealed that his hit “Hello” emerged during one of the most difficult personal periods of his life.
Speaking on the Cory Shepherd Podcast, Kes said several of his biggest songs were created during challenging moments when personal pain and creativity became closely connected.
He recalled driving before the studio session that produced “Hello” after experiencing what he described as a particularly difficult day.
Rather than returning home, Kes said he went to the studio and channelled his emotions into the creative process.
He explained that the original vocal was effectively a demo recorded while he was exhausted and sitting on a stool. He initially intended to return and record another lead vocal.
After listening again, however, Kes decided the original performance contained an authenticity that could be lost by repeatedly recording it.
He said the experience reinforced an important lesson in his creative process: artistes sometimes have to recognise when additional polishing could remove the emotion that made a recording work.
Kes said “Hello” has since become an evergreen song and, according to feedback he receives, is sometimes the first soca recording heard by listeners discovering the genre.
