Ecuador has signed a trade agreement with the United States and increased counter-narcotics cooperation. Peru has joined the Shield of the Americas initiative, and Colombia has moved toward closer security alignment with Washington following the election of President Abelardo de la Espriella.
The administration’s broader regional strategy has included significant interventions in other nations. In January 2025, United States forces detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were subsequently brought to the United States to face federal charges related to narco-terrorism. Additionally, President Trump publicly endorsed Nasry Asfura in the 2025 Honduran presidential election and granted a pardon to former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who had been convicted in the United States on drug trafficking charges.
