‘Important milestone’ reached in redevelopment of National Gallery of Ireland

The National Library of Ireland has reached a new milestone in its redevelopment, with government approval granted for the refurbishment of the West Wing.

The West Wing, which has stored the library’s collections since 1890, will be transformed into a public exhibition and visitor space. The redevelopment will make the area accessible to the public for the first time.

Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport Patrick O’Donovan confirmed the government’s support for the project, stating that it is part of the Minister’s programme of investment in national cultural institutions under the National Development Plan.

The plans include a glazed, sound‑proofed visitors’ gallery that will overlook the main Reading Room, the library’s most iconic space. The project aims to make the library accessible to audiences of all abilities, from children and families to scholars and researchers.

The redevelopment will be funded
