Boakai Demands Action on Bad Loans

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai called on Liberia’s financial sector to take decisive steps to tackle the country’s growing problem of non‑performing loans. Speaking in Monrovia on 10 September 2026, the president warned that repeated failure to implement reforms is eroding public confidence and limiting access to credit for businesses and households.

Boakai noted that Liberia has hosted a number of conferences and issued recommendations on the issue, but he said that without concrete action the problem will continue to worsen. He urged banks, regulators and policymakers to move beyond discussion and adopt measures that will reduce the volume of bad loans and improve the overall health of the banking system.

The president’s remarks come amid concerns that a high level of non‑performing loans is constraining economic growth and discouraging investment. He emphasized that the government must prioritize reforms that strengthen credit risk management and enforce repayment obligations.

Boakai’s statement was reported by The New Dawn Liberia, a local news outlet covering political and economic developments in the country.
