Jonathan Bids Farewell to Ex-Sierra Leone President After 2 Years in Nigeria

**Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma Returns Home After Two-Year Stay in Nigeria**

Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma departed Nigeria on Sunday, marking the end of a two-year stay in the country. He was seen off by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.

Koroma had relocated to Nigeria in January 2024 following treason charges filed against him by the Sierra Leonean government in connection with the November 2023 attacks in Freetown. Two months ago, the Sierra Leonean government dropped the charges, clearing the way for his return.

In a statement regarding the departure, Goodluck Jonathan characterized the event as a significant step toward reconciliation and renewed hope for Sierra Leone. Jonathan noted that he and others had worked to facilitate dialogue with Sierra Leonean authorities to ensure conditions were met for Koroma’s “safe and dignified return.”

“Nigeria was his home away from home for over two years, and I am grateful that we were able to offer friendship, support and solidarity during that period,” Jonathan stated.

Addressing Koroma, Jonathan added, “May your return be a moment of renewed hope and reconciliation for you, your family and the people of Sierra Leone.”
