**Karnataka Launches Cloud Seeding Initiative to Combat Drought**
**BENGALURU** – The Karnataka Water Resources Department officially launched a cloud seeding programme on Friday at HAL Airport in Bengaluru, aiming to mitigate the impact of ongoing drought conditions on agriculture and drinking water supplies.
State Water Resources Minister N. Chaluvarayaswamy and Minister HK Patil inaugurated the initiative, which seeks to induce rainfall across the state.
Minister Chaluvarayaswamy noted that the state previously conducted a similar experiment in 2003, which reportedly achieved a 27% success rate. Regarding the current effort, he stated, “This time, it is not about success or failure. This is for the benefit of the farmers.” He added that the government is targeting a success rate of 20% to 25%, while acknowledging that the outcome remains dependent on atmospheric conditions.
Minister HK Patil defended the initiative against criticism, emphasizing that the process is grounded in scientific principles rather than speculation. “Cloud seeding is not gambling. It is science,” Patil said, expressing hope that suitable cloud formations will be available during the experimental period.
The launch coincides with a broader effort by the Karnataka government to address a severe dry spell affecting more than 100 taluks. Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that he is conducting site visits to districts including Vijayanagara and Bagalkot to assess the drought situation firsthand.
“I should understand the sentiments and situation in each constituency and extend all possible support to them,” Shivakumar said, noting that he has consulted with cabinet ministers and legislators from across the political spectrum regarding the crisis.
The Chief Minister also called for the central government to provide adequate financial assistance to the state. Additionally, he addressed the ongoing Cauvery water dispute with Tamil Nadu, criticizing opposition parties for what he characterized as the politicization of the farmers’ crisis.
