Dr Terrance Drew, the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, has traveled to Martinique for specialized medical observation. This decision follows his admission to the Joseph N France General Hospital in Basseterre on Sunday, where he reported experiencing mild discomfort, nausea, and a headache.
According to an official statement from the Cabinet Secretariat, Dr Drew was admitted for observation and a thorough clinical evaluation. Medical professionals at the JNF General Hospital attended to him for approximately 18 hours. Following comprehensive analysis and diagnostic reviews, his treating physicians expressed satisfaction with his overall condition, noting that he remained awake, alert, and stable.
However, the statement indicated that, out of an abundance of caution and based on the medical team’s observations, doctors recommended that Dr Drew be sent overseas for specialized observation and precautionary monitoring. A source close to the administration informed Barbados TODAY that the Prime Minister was flown to Martinique late on Monday.
The Cabinet Secretariat has urged citizens to keep Dr Drew in their prayers for a swift and full recovery. They also assured the public that government operations would continue without interruption and that updates on Dr Drew’s health would be provided as they become available.
Dr Drew is the fourth Prime Minister of the two-island federation since it gained independence in 1983. He took office in August 2022 after leading the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party to victory in the general election. In addition to his role as Prime Minister, he is a medical doctor specializing in internal medicine and has previously worked at the Joseph N France General Hospital as well as in private practice.
Dr Drew also holds several ministerial responsibilities, including finance, national security, citizenship and immigration, health, human resource management, and social security. His extensive background in medicine and governance has positioned him as a key figure in the administration of St Kitts and Nevis.
The situation has raised concerns among citizens, but the government has emphasized its commitment to transparency and communication regarding Dr Drew’s health status. As the nation awaits further updates, the focus remains on ensuring that the Prime Minister receives the necessary care while maintaining the functionality of the government.
In summary, Dr Terrance Drew’s recent health issues have led to his transfer to Martinique for further medical observation. The government is actively managing the situation and is dedicated to keeping the public informed about his recovery process.
