Students residing in room 402 of Lalon Shah Hall at Islamic University have reported several issues regarding their Wi-Fi network. Allegations include unauthorized access to the Wi-Fi router, changes to the network name that include inappropriate and vulgar terms, blocking of students’ devices, and threats made after complaints were filed. The written complaint was submitted to the hall provost, Associate Professor Md. Abdur Razzaq, on Sunday, August 30.
The affected students have called for an urgent investigation into the matter and for action to be taken against those involved, in accordance with university regulations. In their complaint, the students noted that a similar incident had occurred approximately six months ago, where unauthorized access and changes to the router settings were reported. They claimed that after verifying the issue, a resolution was reached with the parties involved. However, they allege that similar incidents have recurred.
According to the students, for the past month, various devices connected to the Wi-Fi network in their room have been consistently blocked. They also reported that the Wi-Fi name has been changed to include various inappropriate, vulgar, and derogatory words and phrases. This has not only hindered their internet access but has also caused them mental distress.
The students expressed that due to the inability to use the Wi-Fi, they have been forced to purchase personal mobile data or internet packages to carry out necessary online activities, resulting in an additional monthly expense of approximately 500 to 600 Taka or more. They also mentioned that this situation has disrupted their online classes, communication with teachers and peers, collection of academic materials, research, and other educational activities.
In their complaint, the students mentioned that they have gathered some screenshots and technical information while verifying the incident, including details related to Device Name and MAC Address. They identified a device as being used by a student named ‘Jitu’ from room 403. However, the students clarified that they are not blaming anyone solely based on the Device Name or MAC Address. Instead, they are requesting an impartial technical investigation to verify the ownership of the relevant device, its connection to the router, access history, and any involvement in changing the Wi-Fi settings.
The students have also demanded that the technical information held by technician ‘Joy’, who is responsible for the hall’s Wi-Fi and network, be included in the investigation, along with records related to the router and observations regarding previous and current incidents.
Furthermore, the situation has reportedly escalated following the publication of complaints and news articles, with allegations of threats made by a student named ‘Sabbir’ from the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science for the academic year 2022-23. The students have called for a separate investigation to uncover the truth behind these allegations. Sabbir has denied the threat allegations, stating, ‘I did not threaten anyone. I do not know who controls their router.’
Attempts to contact the accused student Jitu multiple times via mobile phone were unsuccessful as his number was found to be switched off. In response to the situation, Lalon Shah Hall Provost Professor Md. Abdur Razzaq stated, ‘I will meet with the residential teachers regarding this matter and will make every effort to identify the offenders. Subsequently, a meeting will be held with all complainants and the accused.’
