**National Unity Minister Calls for Inclusion of Kanowit District in Malaysia’s “Desa Lestari” Programme**
*Kuching, Sarawak – August 30, 2024* – Malaysia’s Minister of National Unity, Dato’ Ean Agho Dagang, has formally requested that the Kanowit district in Sarawak be considered for inclusion in the federal “Desa Lestari” (Sustainable Village) initiative.
The appeal was made during the inauguration of the third phase of the Jalan Melanun–Sungai Poi road project, which is being constructed in the Melanun Ili area of the Sungai Poi region. While attending the ceremony, the minister highlighted the potential benefits of extending the Desa Lestari programme to Kanowit, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development and community empowerment in the district.
Desa Lestari is a nationwide programme aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods, environmental stewardship, and improved infrastructure in rural villages. Inclusion in the programme typically involves coordinated efforts between federal and state authorities, as well as local community groups, to implement projects that enhance economic opportunities and preserve natural resources.
The minister’s request adds Kanowit to the list of districts under review for possible integration into the programme. No decision has yet been announced, and further assessments will be required to determine eligibility and implementation timelines.
