**United States Announces Sh930 Million Initiative to Modernise Kenya Police Training**
Nairobi – The United States has unveiled a Sh930 million (approximately US$7 million) programme aimed at modernising police training in Kenya and enhancing the professionalism of the National Police Service.
The initiative was formally launched on Friday at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo. Representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi highlighted the importance of well‑trained officers for safeguarding citizens and creating a secure environment for businesses. In a statement, the embassy said, “We believe well‑trained officers can best protect and serve their fellow citizens,” and added that security is “critical to the operations of both Kenyan and American businesses.”
The launch coincided with the graduation of a new cohort of police recruits, and the embassy extended congratulations to the newly commissioned officers as they begin their service.
The funding comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Kenya’s police force regarding accountability, discipline and adherence to human‑rights standards. Over recent years, the National Police Service has faced pressure to improve training and public confidence while responding to emerging security challenges.
Historically, the United States has supported Kenya’s security sector through training, equipment provision and capacity‑building programmes, particularly in counter‑terrorism, law enforcement and professional development. The current investment places police training at the centre of these collaborative efforts, with the Kiganjo college identified as a key institution for preparing officers.
The U.S. Embassy reiterated its commitment to a secure Kenya, stating, “We remain committed to a safe and prosperous Kenya,” and affirmed that professional policing is essential for protecting citizens and supporting economic activity.
