**Bhutanese Princess Visits Timor‑Leste, Attends Science for Development Summit**
*Dili, Timor‑Leste – 26 August 2026* – Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck of Bhutan arrived in Dili on 22 August 2026 and spent three days in the capital on a series of diplomatic and scientific engagements, according to a report by *Daily Bhutan*.
The princess was received at Nicolau Lobato International Airport by Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Jesuína Ferreira Gomes, who acted on behalf of Foreign Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas. The Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Palace also attended the welcoming ceremony.
Following the airport reception, the princess took part in a luncheon hosted by Gomes at the JL World Hotel Metiaut. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic community and was described as an opportunity for Bhutan and Timor‑Leste officials to exchange views on leadership and public service.
Princess Sonam’s visit coincided with the Science for Development Summit 2026, held at the Dili Convention Centre. On 24 August 2026 she delivered the opening plenary address at the summit, which was organized under the theme “Science in Service of Life.” The summit, jointly patronised by President José Ramos‑Horta and Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, gathered scientists, researchers, educators, policymakers and international participants, including Nobel laureates and Turing Award winners, to discuss the role of science and knowledge in national development.
The visit follows earlier exchanges between the two countries. In March 2023, Timor‑Leste Finance Minister Rui Gomes and then‑Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Adaljiza Magno met with Bhutan’s Prime Minister Lotay Tshering on the sidelines of the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Doha, Qatar. During that meeting Bhutan shared its experience preparing to graduate from the United Nations Least Developed Country (LDC) category—a transition that was completed on 13 December 2023, making Bhutan the seventh country to graduate from the LDC list.
Analysts note that, despite their geographic separation, Bhutan and Timor‑Leste have opportunities to learn from each other’s development pathways, particularly in areas such as institutional reform, education, and public service.
